Sep 2nd
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
After you listen to the show, you won’t be able to say “but, there’s nothing going on!” Our fabulous events contributor J. Seth Anderson joins me in-studio this week as we focus the whole show on what’s going on for the long holiday weekend. Seth also introduces his life as a blogger and a Downtown Phoenix Aficionado to our listening audience, we always encourage you to check out his own blog over at jsethanderson.com !
So that’s it, no massive event link lists this week, you’ve just got to listen to the show to find out what is going on and then go decide to do something! Also, we’ve reached a milestone as we hit show number Ten and it feels great to be the ‘online radio voice for GLBT Arizona’, if we do say so ourselves.
To plug one of our sponsors, AIDS Walk 2010 is just a month away, so get over to aidswalkphoenix.org and register to walk, donate or volunteer (or all 3) !!
AIDS Walk Phoenix 2010
Aug 26th
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
Kirk Baxter continues to be incredibly involved in our community, even as he turns the magical 50 years young! As if founding Body Positive many years ago wasn’t enough, he’s still the chair of the AIDS Walk today. In its third year since coming back in 2008, the Walk is looking to once again double its fundraising this year and they need your help to do it! Kirk talks about his own personal story and why the Walk is important to him.
AIDS Walk 2010 is Sunday, October 3rd and we give you all the details in the show. The Walk is on the very same weekend as Rainbows Festival, and it always makes for a enjoyable time downtown! We are challenging all of our listeners of QTalk Arizona to either participate in or donate to the Walk. How, you ask? Head over to www.aidswalkphoenix.org — it’s easy!
And speaking of things to do, you’ll have to listen to Seth Anderson’s report on what is going on this weekend. Did we mention there is a TON of things to do? Explore your city and your state. The weather has cooled a bit and won’t be scorching!

Look out Washington, Rodney Glassman has new energy and wants to steamroll ahead on many issues! Rodney is courting the GLBT vote for the Arizona US Senate seat and has earned the endorsement of the Arizona Stonewall Democrats. He’s very well spoken and has a proven track record from serving on the Tucson City Council. He’s also had a taste of what goes on in Washington after serving on the Congressional staff of Rep. Raul Grijalva. Listen as Rodney addresses many campaign points and talks about his stance on equal rights — ‘Equal Means Equal’.

A Genuine Candidate for Attorney General
Aug 5th
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
Felecia Rotellini wants your vote. But who is she and why is she reaching out to the GLBT community? She’s what I call a ‘genuine’ candidate for the Attorney General of Arizona, not a career-minded politician. She believes in equal rights for all. Not just ’sort-of’ equal rights, but true equal rights. I met her first at Phoenix Pride where she was the only AG candidate trying to reach out to us, and I also heard her speak at the event at My Florist Cafe a few weeks ago.
I’m pleased to bring you this interview with Felecia and you can listen to her position on various issues. It’s part of our mini-series of interviews that we are doing to bring their voices, positions and stories directly to you.
Visit Felecia’s web site for full information at www.feleciaforarizona.com and also find her on Facebook and Twitter!
Of course, this week we had two great events happen: Proposition 8 was deemed unconstitutional and Elena Kagan was confirmed as the next U.S. Supreme Court Justice. There’s definitely a feeling of momentum going on and we sincerely hope it continues!
We’ve also got the voice of J. Seth Anderson giving you the scoop on fun events going on around the state this weekend, check out the links below for more information and listen to the show for the full details.

Blogging the Rails
Jul 22nd
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
This week I talk with Tony Arranaga, who is the self titled ‘Light Rail Blogger.’ If you’re on Facebook or Twitter and you’re in or around the downtown Phoenix area and you don’t know him, then you’re probably living under a rock! Tony started covering the METRO light rail around the time when it opened in December 2008 and the little project eventually turned into a challenge for him to live car-free in Phoenix, even during the summers!
Tony discusses what inspired him to start blogging about the light rail and a little bit about who he is and how he’s involved with the community. We also discuss what the appeal of riding a train versus taking a bus and how it also appeals to the gay population. Tony is always putting out useful information about all kinds of things going on in and around the METRO light rail line on his various online accounts.
Some Community Events Going on this Weekend in Phoenix:
1n10 Car Wash at Community Church of Hope: www.1n10.org
Dancing with the Bars at Wyndham Downtown: www.swayevents.com
Like we mentioned on the show, there are changes coming up on Monday to METRO’s operating hours and train frequency. For more details, head over to METRO’s web site.
You can find Tony’s Light Rail Blog pretty much all over the Internet, but here are some helpful links:

The HEAT is ON!
Jul 11th
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
Wasn’t it just 99 degrees outside? These super-high temperatures always seem to creep up on us, but it seems this year that they have hit us like a frying pan that just came off an overheated sidewalk!
Not much you can do except to head indoors or into a nice cool body of water somewhere, but we’ve got some tips for you to get out of the heat and meet some new people.
In the news this week: Scientists find antibodies that prevent most HIV strains from infecting human cells. Very impressive and encouraging news! Check out the full article here. Also this week, a federal judge in Massachusetts has ruled parts of DOMA as unconstitutional. What will the silly right-wing people in Washington do? Hopefully they won’t notice and we can just keep moving forward with getting the equal rights that we deserve.
Congratulations to our political contributor Nathan Treanor, he recently continued his own podcast and is starting to put out new episodes! He included his segment on his own show that he had contributed to qTalk AZ and you can listen to his podcast on iTunes or NathanOutLoud.com
We’re ramping up and scheduling our series of guests for qTalk Arizona and will probably be on a bi-weekly schedule until mid-August. We’ll be hitting the political and election season hard and bring you some people and their stories who are trying to get your vote this year. But more importantly, we’ll find out what they would actually be doing for us and not just why they want us to vote for them.
Until next time, if you want to go back in time and hear some other interviews from our previous incarnation, check out some of the old episodes of NidoCAST. We might even replay them to keep things fresh here on qTalk Arizona. I look forward to seeing everyone at the First Mondays Social tomorrow at Ticoz!

Christopher Palumbo-Jensen joins me in the studio this week to talk about Transition House, a new project that he and a team of people are working to bring to our community. Transition House is designed to offer low-income housing for gay men who have become unemployed, underemployed or are in abusive relationships. We talk about why this is so needed, especially now, and how you can get involved and help Transition House become a reality. Their first fundraiser is on Wednesday, July 28th at Alexi’s in Central Phoenix and features fabulous food and wine plus a silent auction!
To reach Christopher, obtain more information and/or get involved with Transition House, shoot him an email at christopher@2jtech.com
We’ve also got a jam-packed report by our events contributor J. Seth Anderson. All the stuff you need to know about this long Independence Day Weekend and how you can celebrate around the state is in the podcast! You also can check out J. Seth Anderson’s own blog at www.jsethanderson.com

Working to build our ONE Community
Jun 26th
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
Angela Hughey decided that something was decidedly missing from the Valley’s GLBT world, both in business and in personal. And thus, at the end of 2008, One Community was born! One Community is an interactive web and events community gay, lesbian and allied individuals and businesses. What does that all mean? You’ll just have to listen to find out! But the key word is ‘allies’. One Community works to bring together both our community and our allies, instead of keeping them separate.
On this week’s show, our political contributor, Nathan Treanor, gives us a report on the latest with SB 1070. SB 1070 has polarized the state and caused upheavals and potential lawsuits against Arizona across the nation. Nathan also gives us insight on why SB 1070 impacts our own GLBT community and why many of us are standing together with the latino community to protest it.
Click here for the AZCentral opinion piece on SB 1070 by Krysten Sinema, as well as for this link to early voter registration. For more information on Nathan Treanor, visit NathanOutLoud.com
And for more information on One Community, upcoming events and how they can help you network both personally and professionally, check out their web site at www.one-community.us
