Sherry Vine was born in The Amish country. On her 16th birthday she discovered she was adopted and actually Jewish. Miss Vine lived in Berlin from 2001 till 2005 and is now happy to be back home in Manhattan.

It’s been nearly a year since Olivia Gardens and Freddy Prinze Charming became Miss and Mister Phoenix Gay Pride 2011. It’s been a long journey and an eventful year of fundraising and reaching out to the community, both in Phoenix and across the State. Both Olivia and Freddy share their stories from the year and talk about the upcoming Pageant that will determine the Pride Royalty for 2012. They also talk about how they got into doing drag and performance in the first place. After a very busy year, they’re both looking forward to passing the baton and stepping down from their roles.

In the news this week: Proposition 8 was ruled unconstitutional by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, The Susan G. Komen Foundation reverses its controversial decision and there’s been the big JCPenney / Ellen story in the news. We all give our take on these issues and even our audience chimes in.

We’re all thrilled that we were selected as a finalist to present our idea for QTalk America to a panel of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists! While QTalk Arizona is still our primary focus, we are now in the slow roll-out of QTalk America. Whoa! What’s that? QTalk America will be the national ‘parent’ of QTalk Arizona, and will focus on our talk shows that reach beyond our state’s borders. And, eventually, we’ll be reaching out to other states and cities to bring QTalk to them. The goal is to build a coast-to-coast network of talk shows for the LGBT community and our allies, in both local and national flavors. This has never attempted before on this scale. The LaunchSpot Rapid Pitch event (a part of the Tempe Geeks Night Out), organized in partnership with ASU Venture Catalyst, the City of Tempe, Tallwave and the Phoenix Business Journal will give 6 early stage start-ups an opportunity to pitch in front of some truly great names in entrepreneurship and venture capital. That celebrated (or dreaded depending on your Facebook status), heart-shaped holiday is upon us, so listen in to hear which Valley venues made our best and worst list. What would you do if someone took you to the gay Denny’s to celebrate your love? We even ask Siri for her recommendations! And, for those of us who love Arizona, we can’t forget that Valentine’s Day this year marks the Arizona Centennial — yep, we’re an even 100 years old!

The news coming out of Washington State gave the EDBF crew reason to raise a glass or two and toast to marriage equality. Our festive choice? Charles Smith Chateau Smith Cabernet Sauvignon 08 is a delicious bottle from winemaker and Sammy Hagar’s doppleganger, Charles Smith.

This month’s episode features a special guest, Derek Bryant, who is a visiting chef and micro brew aficionado from Albuquerque, New Mexico. In honor of the exciting news coming from the northwest, Derek brought us a selection of Washington State brews from Leavenworth Biers and Scuttlebutt Brewing Company, to butch up our beverage choices. Also, listen closely as he describes his latest creation, Bacon Cupcakes.

Joe and Babe #63: Lots of C.A.R.E. and Film Festival Fun in Southern Arizona

It’s our “Southern Arizona Fried Chicken Special!!” This week, we’re talking all about what’s going on south of Phoenix. We’re joined in-studio by Christopher Jay Hall, interim President of Central Arizona Rainbow Eduction (C.A.R.E.) and via phone by Joe Sprague, Director of the Out in the Desert LGBT Film Festival. From Casa Grande to Tucson, we’re talking to these great individuals who are making a difference in their local communities and we’re learning about their upcoming events!

Christopher Jay Hall worked to start the March for Equality in Casa Grande, which has evolved into a larger event including a festival with exhibitors and entertainment. How did it get started? There was a need, of course! In 2006, he wanted to start a gay-straight alliance at his high school, and things just ‘blossomed from there.’ C.A.R.E. is now an organization that serves the LGBTQ community in the rural areas of Central Arizona. The upcoming 4th Annual March for Equality takes place on Saturday, March 31 from Noon to 4pm at Peart Park in Casa Grande. The actual March itself will take place at 10am. Both events are free admission are open to all-ages.

Joe Sprague hails originally from Chicago and was involved in many years of LGBT film festivals before he moved to Tucson. And now, he’s bringing his talents to The Old Pueblo and has created one of the largest (by number of films) LGBT film festivals in the entire country! A total of 165 films will be shown at the Out in the Desert Film Festival at several locations in Tucson during the weekends of February 17-19 and February 24-26. Over 40 VIPs from the films will be in Tucson to be a part of the festival. It is shaping up to be an incredible festival and we’re excited that Tucson gets to take this giant leap into LGBT film festival history!

Compete Radio #3-2: Athlete of the Year David Rae and Eric’s Super Bowl Predictions!

This week, we’ve got Compete Magazine’s 2011 Athlete of the Year David Rae as our featured guest, plus we’re talking about upcoming events, straight ally Hudson Taylor and predictions for the Super Bowl!

David Rae is incredibly involved in the gay community of Los Angeles and West Hollywood, although we’d have to say it extends far beyond just those cities! He’s been involved in the AIDS/Life Cycle ride since 2008 as team captain of ‘Team Popular’. On top of working to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for ALC, he’s involved in raising money for the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center. His love of cycling meshes seamlessly with the ALC fundraising effort, and, his family’s background in sports (his dad, Mike Rae, was a NFL quarterback) definitely influenced his hyper-active lifestyle.

Connie is out this week so Eric and Joe talk it up this week about the latest from the Compete Network… are sports players paid too much? And what about baseball players? Also, the latest with Hudson Taylor and his Athlete Ally organization which is working to eliminate homophobia in collegiate sports.

Jeremy Schachter joins us today to talk about the upcoming one n ten Fresh Brunch at The Phoenician on Sunday, February 26th. He’s the chair of the Brunch and he’s got the full scoop on the event. He’s on a mission to raise $100,000 for the organization through the Brunch, and he wants you to help him by buying tickets!

We also reflect on the tragedy from this past week that left two of our community, Savannah Stevens and Wes Eichsteadt, severely injured after an attack. Our thoughts are with them as they recover.

Gay Sports Talk Show Compete Radio joins QTalk Arizona

QTalk Arizona welcomes gay sports talk show, Compete Radio, to its network.

PHOENIX, AZ, 01/19/2012 — QTalk Arizona is excited to announce that Compete Radio is joining its network of podcasts and live call-in shows. Previously, QTalk Arizona had syndicated portions of Compete Radio’s programs as ‘SportsCast’. But now, the full episodes will be available on QTalk Arizona’s podcast feeds and streaming audio. QTalk Arizona also becomes the production team for Compete Radio’s weekly shows.

Compete Radio’s third season will launch at 2pm MST on Saturday, January 28th, 2012 with co-hosts Eric Carlyle and Connie Wardman from Compete Sports Media and Joe Dugandzic from QTalk Arizona. The first featured guest will be Jack Mackenroth–gay and HIV+ swimmer, model, LGBT rights advocate and fashion designer who competed on the fourth season of Project Runway.

First launched in October 2010, Compete Radio brings together gay sports and athlete interviews with a bit of news and pop culture mixed in. QTalk Arizona was created in June 2010 by podcaster Joe Dugandzic as a way to fill the void in LGBT talk radio programming in Arizona. Larry Pfeiffer joins us from the Men’s Discussion Group at One Voice Community Center. One question that’s been burning in our minds: just what do you discuss at a Men’s Discussion Group? Well, yes, there are some topics that apparently are off-limits, but it’s a very popular group on Monday nights at the Center and just keeps on getting better.

This week, we lost another gay teen to suicide. Eric James Borges from California took his life this week after struggling with his coming out process and his family’s non-acceptance of him. What’s terribly sad about this is that he had a wonderful community full of support around him, and he even made an “It Gets Better” video just about a month ago. Anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts and have no one to turn to for help, please call The Trevor Project at 866-488-7386.

One of our very own, local GLSEN co-chair and ASU professor Madelaine Adelman, was honored on Friday with the Living the Dream Award at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Awards Breakfast. It’s great to see the award go to someone who is doing great work to advance civil rights through non-violence.

The 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took over Las Vegas this week, and as usual, it was enormous! We’ve got all the main points of coverage for you, plus a few one-off strange ideas that seemed like they wouldn’t really materialize. Our special guest for this episode it “that other, other guy from the office” — Victor! He’s got some great contrasting opinions and his predictions for 2012 and it makes for a great show.

In general, we were blown away by the 55″ OLED TVs from LG and Samsung, the new Makerbot and Cubify 3D printers bring on a whole slew of ‘do it yourself’ ideas and we’re really not so sure about these Ultrabooks yet. Listen to our commentary and analysis for all the juicy details!

Food trucks have become a gourmet phenomenon over the past few years, not to mention being helped by Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race” hosted by Tyler Florence. And speaking of Tyler, he’ll be making a special guest appearance at the Food Truck Festival on Saturday. Aaron Studebaker from Salt River Fields gave us an awesome interview and talks about how the event came to be and gives us the inside scoop on what’s planned for this massive event. Claudine tells about the amazing experience that she had when she recently checked out Rice Paper, a relatively new Vietnamese restaurant in Central Phoenix. This new gem has amazing Pho and also specializes in their rolls, which are made with a very thin wrapper (hence the Rice Paper name) which makes them somewhere in-between an egg roll and traditional sushi rolls. Definitely put it on your list!

Joe dishes about how he just came back from stuffing himself silly at Girl Meets Fork’s Pancake Quest 2012 — an ultimate showdown of eight local chefs vying for the honor of the best pancake in town. I especially liked those from Orange Table, Smart Kitchen and Elemental Sugar. If you’re curious about their pancakes from those three, here they are: Buttermilk pancake with fresh ricotta and prosciutto, Meyer lemon butter, ground cherry maple syrup; cream cheese-infused, reduced port wine pancake with fresh raspberry coolie; and grain-free, gluten-free pancake with mesquite flour, pochi berry with chai-infused butter. The event was hosted by Perk Eatery, who put out some pretty amazing spiced sweet potato pancakes with a praline bacon crumble and whiskey bourbon sauce. An incredible event, to be sure!

Girl Meets Fork is run by foodie and PR gal Susie Timm and is a boutique marketing firm for the restaurant and specialty food industries. Seth has lived in the Valley for many years, but over the past decade has really to come to love downtown Phoenix. He’s very actively involved in preserving historic buildings and working to create better ways of using our existing land. In fact, he’s so active that he recently co-authored a book on the very subject! The book, aptly named “Downtown Phoenix” is now available and it’s a beautiful book with countless wonderfully historic photographs that tell the stories of our downtown.

And so, that guy or girl that you’ve been with for months and months — or years and years, is driving you completely nuts! How is it that you overlooked the ‘little things’ in the beginning of the relationship? It’s those little idiosyncrasies — the little things that we do without even thinking about it. When we’re alone, it doesn’t matter, but as soon as you take on a partner — well, they’re going to see those things front and center.

How do you deal with these things later on in a relationship? And, if you’re just starting out dating someone, how can you spot these things in the beginning? Is it a bad thing to ‘weed people out’ in the early stages of a relationship? Yes and no, the answer to that is a bit complicated. But, Dr. Dina answers all of those questions and more on this week’s show!

We can’t believe it’s our last show of the year, and we saved a very special guest for last! Ace Lundon hosts the Lundon Calling podcast every week, but that doesn’t really tell his story. He’s a legend in his own right, and he has a never-ending lifetime of stories to tell.

Ace has been in the entertainment industry for decades, a radio host, managing editor of a national gay magazine and an activist for HIV/AIDS and other major issues of our community. He’s even said to have psychic abilities! Friends with superstars such as Mae West and Judy Canova, he produced the longest running monthly show in history that entertained the troops who were heading out for the Vietnam War — over 750,000!

Ace Lundon

Learn the bits and pieces of his life that aren’t mentioned anywhere in press releases or on his web site, as we also talk about the changes going on in our world today. He truly is someone who ‘done it all’ and he has an opinion on just about everything–including using whatever words you need to in writing, and in life. He tells us how he was let go from teaching an advanced writing class in a high school in South Dakota, for talking about “the masturbation of one’s mind”. He used the term appropriately, but oh boy, the vice principal didn’t think so!

It was a lot of fun having Ace Lundon on our show, Joe had appeared on his show earlier and it was only appropriate to return the favor!

We’ve got the ‘power couple’ Micheal Weakley and Jimmie Munoz with us in-studio to talk about dealing with our relationships at the holiday season. How to deal with families, different traditions and all the parties that you get invited to!

Plus, we’ve got Joseph Gesulio from the GPGLCC to talk about this weekend’s Festival of Trees event!

Micheal and Jimmie also tell us how they make time for each other, whether it’s year-round or at the busy holiday season. Micheal is the Director of Programs for 1n10 and Jimmie is the Project Manager for Phoenix Pride, so they both lead busy lives and are heavily involved with our LGBT community. This too, plays into the dynamics of their relationship and they work with it quite well.

All four of us each share our little tips and ideas for making it a wonderful holiday season, whether you’re partnered, dating or single. Just be happy with who you are and your life. You never know what’s around the corner, so enjoy today for what it is.

Micheal also talks about his recent trip to Washington D.C. to work with NASTAD, an organization that works across the country in STD prevention and advocating for better sex education in schools. We touch on Hillary Clinton’s historic speech yesterday on LGBT Human Rights around the world.
